Accessories: Glossary of Terms

Bags, belts, scarves, hats, sunglasses, and jewelry — the pieces that finish an outfit.

Crossbody bag

A small-to-mid-size bag worn with a long strap across the body from one shoulder to the opposite hip.

Shoulder bag

A bag with a strap short enough to sit at the shoulder without crossing the body.

Tote bag

A large open-top bag with two parallel top handles. Structured (leather) or soft (canvas).

Bucket bag

A round or oval bag with a flat bottom and a drawstring or magnetic top closure.

Hobo bag

A soft, slouchy shoulder bag with a curved crescent shape and a single strap.

Clutch

A small handheld bag with no strap, or a slim removable strap. Evening or occasion.

Baguette bag

A slim, rectangular shoulder bag with a short strap. Named for the loaf; associated with Fendi's 1990s design.

Backpack

A two-strap bag worn on both shoulders. Range from technical hiking to leather fashion.

Belt

A strap worn around the waist to hold trousers or as a shaping accessory over a dress or coat.

Scarf

A woven, printed, or knit rectangle worn around the neck, shoulders, or head.

Silk scarf

A square silk scarf — Hermès-shape — tied at the neck, wrist, or bag handle, or worn as a headscarf.

Bucket hat

A soft, down-sloping brimmed hat with a flat crown. Casual, packable.

Baseball cap

A soft-crown cap with a stiff curved brim and a rear adjuster. Six panels standard.

Beret

A soft, round flat-crown cap, wool or felt, worn tilted.

Fedora

A soft felt hat with a pinched crown and a medium brim.

Sunglasses

Tinted eyewear. Frame families include aviator, wayfarer, cat-eye, round, oversized, shield.

Watch

A timepiece worn on the wrist. Analog (dressy) or digital/smart (technical).

Necklace

Jewelry worn around the neck. Chain, pendant, choker, lariat, statement.
